VICTOR G MARTINEZ
Designer, Researcher, Teacher, Systems Thinker
PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
I am a husband, dad and designer with a large curiosity on many topics and how they relate to my profession and life as a designer. Sustainability is the main one, from it many other areas of study and research as well as projects have developed.
Currently I am Faculty Member at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Richmond, Canada (unceded land of the Musqueam First Nation).
I completed my PhD in 2016 from Northumbria University, UK. My project explored the early stages of new product development and how to integrate sustainability criteria. As part of this research I developed Trophec, an online product lifecycle visualisation tool.
I first studied Industrial Design (1998) and then did a Master in Transportation Design (2001). I have worked with partners and clients from Mexico, China, Iran, Germany, UK, US, Italy and Spain.
In 2009 I cofounded Ecopilia, a spin-off company from my research on biodegradable materials.
I have 10 years of experience teaching industrial design, and as a researcher in the fields of biodegradable materials, alternative urban mobility and systems thinking for design.
I have had the honour to speak at conferences or teach in Mexico, Canada, Slovenia, Ecuador, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, India and the UK.
My personal interest subjects are: systems thinking, complexity, sustainability and new business models, all applied to the design process of products, services or systems.
